Ingredients:
- 4 large potatoes (Russet potatoes are ideal)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Salt (to taste)
- Optional: pepper, garlic powder, paprika, or any seasoning of choice
Instructions:
Prep the Potatoes:
- Peel the potatoes (optional) and cut them into thin strips. Aim for about 1/4-inch thick strips for crispy fries.
- Place the potato strips into a bowl of cold water as you cut them. This helps remove excess starch, resulting in crispier fries.
Soak the Potatoes:
- Let the potato strips soak in water for at least 30 minutes. If you have time, soaking them for up to an hour or even overnight is best.
Heat the Oil:
- In a deep pan or fryer, heat vegetable oil to about 350°F (175°C). Make sure there’s enough oil to submerge the fries.
Dry the Potatoes:
- After soaking, drain and pat the potatoes dry with a towel. This prevents oil splattering and helps the fries get crispy.
Fry the Potatoes (Double Fry Method for Crispy Fries):
- First Fry: Carefully drop the potato strips into the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for 3-4 minutes until they’re soft but not yet browned. Remove them and let them drain on paper towels.
- Second Fry: Increase the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C). Fry the potatoes again in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy.
Drain and Season:
- Remove the fries from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately season with salt (and other spices if desired).
Serve:
- Serve your French fries hot, with your favorite dipping sauce (like ketchup, mayo, or garlic sauce).
Enjoy your crispy homemade French fries! 🍟
